After careful consideration of the needs of Essex County Public Schools and the limits of oversight that the Board has, the members of the Essex County School Board are choosing to move our school division forward with new leadership at the helm. At its monthly meeting on April 8, 2019, the Essex County School Board voted to terminate the contract of the superintendent, Dr. Scott Burckbuchler, and announced today, April 11, 2019, that it will begin the process of hiring a new superintendent by seeking public input on qualifications.
The school board has created a survey related to superintendent criteria, which is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EssexSearch and on the home page of the division web site. Hard copies of the survey will also be available at the school board administration offices, at each school, and the Essex County Public Library.
In addition to the survey, the board will hold a public hearing:
Date: April 22, 2019
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Essex County School Board Office Complex
“Hiring a new superintendent is the biggest task facing a School Board and we want to make sure that the public has a voice in this process,” said School Board Chair, Jacob Plummer. “We hope that parents, staff and residents will take time to fill out the survey and / or attend the public hearing.”
The school board selected the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) to assist the board with the superintendent search. The board will meet on April 26th at 8:00 a.m. to finalize the qualifications and timeline for the search.
